end of the dream…or the beginning?
20080502 12:30just returned from a long weekend in california. the lush landscape, spanish architecture, and warm weather is an instant upper for me. but to be honest, i’m happy to be home. being in l.a. is like being in a fantasy…someone else’s fantasy. seems like every other person you run into is an aspiring (blank) or performs some vague function in a glamorous sounding industry. (i.e. “i’m in commercial real estate” - read: assistant; “i’m with (blank) record label” - read: receptionist). watching these people drive second hand luxury cars, sit in traffic, and living some one bedroom apartment 45 miles in land just to brag to the folks back in ohio about their glamorous life felt so transparent and dirty. like watching a reality show minus the entertainment value, because unlike a reality show, these are real lives.
flying time is reading time for me. and amongst the fortunes, times, radars and wireds were full of alarmist cries that the end of the aspirant age is here. and that gen x + y’s are finally waking up from the dream of economic bliss and facing the consequences of their lifestyles. it makes sense, we’re bombarded by cries of recession, our wallets are tightened by the price at the pump, and layoffs are a real threat looming over every paycheck, why wouldn’t we as a society adopt a more conservative lifestyle?
because we are spoiled, entitled, and arrogant.
